Bike Sharing: Pain in the Neck or Urban Transportation Solution?

2 Written by: | Tuesday, Jul 02, 2013 1:42pm

Will you use Charm City Bikeshare when it comes to Baltimore next year?  The above video by renowned filmmaker Casey Neistat might help you decide.  He has made a video to compare the convenience of CitiBike, the bike share program in New York City, to other modes of transportation. While he conducts his experiment in New York, many of the obstacles are transferrable to the Baltimore commuting experience. And the downsides of CitiBike — for one, a too long checkout period — is something we hope the city decision makers will take note of when choosing a vendor to run the pollution-free, traffic-reducing transportation program.

Check it out.  If nothing else, it’s fun to watch.

Okay, full disclosure, ain’t no way I’m going to be using Charm City Bikeshare, and I don’t see Baltimore being a “city that rides”, but what do I know anyway? On the other hand, as Ms. Dunn accurately points out, the video is a ton of fun to watch!

If you actually watch the video, Casey determines that CitiBike is the least pain in the ass way to get around New York if you’re a yearly member and only time consuming for tourists and short-term users. I’ll ride Charm City Bikeshare when it gets started and am pretty sure a lot of other folks will as well. Instead of bicycling being restricted to people that have a bike that is well maintained and convenient to get, anyone with a credit card in the areas served by bike sharing will be able to take a bike for any trip of up to half an hour. Great deal
