If the reports are true, Under Armour’s newest endorser is a far cry from Chef Curry, The Rock or the leader of the perennial Super Bowl-contending New England Patriots.

Last night at school, my student Amelia had a question. “As writers,” she asked, “do we have to feel shame for liking books written by celebrities? Because —” She cast down her big brown eyes and gathered her courage. “I love them.” Read More →

JUSTIN-TIMBERLAKE

By now, I’ve totally forgiven Justin Timberlake for that whole N’Sync thing; his recent appearance in Baltimore seals the deal. After a meal of lobsters, snow crab legs, shrimp, clams, mussels, and vegetables at Phillips Seafood costing $300, JT left a $100 tip — and a thank you note emblazoned with his signature.

Larry David + Dozens of Other Famous People Went to the University of Maryland

0 Written by: | Friday, Feb 10, 2012 4:50pm

We’ve always thought highly of the University of Maryland at College Park, but now that we know sitcom innovator Larry David’s an alum — he graduated in ’70 with a double major in business and history — we pretty much revere the place. More impressive yet: Life-changing, well-meaning, happy-message-sending Muppets-god Jim Henson graduated from Maryland in ’60! Super fun to read the Sun’s photo tour of famous U. of Maryland alums this afternoon. Oh, television legend David Simon’s on the list, too.

Why is it so exciting to learn that a person you admire attended college at a school near you? Maybe because it makes the broad world seem momentarily smaller, in a very good way, when we understand that giant movers and shakers, who’ve made reality of imaginative possibility, walked the same streets we walk as we daydream tomorrow.

Other Earth-Shattering Terps: Google founder Sergey Brin ’93, broadcast journalist Connie Chung ’69; Raiders of the Lost Ark’s Karen Allen took courses at Maryland for a period. See the story for more striking surprises!

Hometown Girl

Over 500 people showed up last Saturday night at the Irvine Nature Center to eat, drink and gawk at “Modern Family” star Julie Bowen, and to raise money for a good cause. Truth be told, many in attendance were family and friends of the Emmy-winning actress. She played the part of auctioneer that night, cajoling bidders to pay upward of $20,000 for a lunch date with her and raising a record amount for the night.

Which “Modern Family” episode is your favorite?

“Strangers on a Treadmill,” when I have to tell Cam he looked bad in the bikers shorts, and “Regrets Only” (when she and Phil fight and he doesn’t know why and she is upset about the wedge salad).

How did you pick the dress you wore to the Emmys? You looked great.

I never do this but I took pictures and showed them to the girls on the show. There was a Carolina Herrera that was beautifu,l but Sophia thought it was too conservative so I picked the Oscar de la Renta.
